Mord: Necrosodomic abyss

28/03/08  ||  Kampfar

Mord is not a Norwegian black metal band – they’re Polish, both members, but the Norsemen tag remains. Nordra may live, fuck and play here, at least he once did, but he did not transform into a Norwegian by breathing the air alone. I’m sure the lyrics wouldn’t be in Polish if so were the case.

Truth is spoken, time for dissection.

If you are familiar with “Desert northern hell”, courtesy of Tsjuder, just think of it and you’ll have a more than decent grasp of what “NA” is all about. Yeah, violent blasting coupled with groovy mid-tempo sections is the name of the game. If you are a hater of the blast, however, you will never reach those parts. For not only is the blast very present, Mr. Necrolucas obviously visited the studio, presumably at night, and set his input at 11. His effort doesn’t sound overly triggered, if at all, just loud as fuck, on the brink of muting out the riffs even.

And he is a hard hitter to begin with…

At times I downright dig his powerful blasts (it helps imaging him operating a mitrailleuse), but due to Nordra’s inability to come up with enough quality riffs I’m too often pummeled into boredom. And it’s not because I’m old. Make no mistakes, there are indeed some fine riffs here, no doubt frenetic, but all the slow ones are stolen from the Tsjuder’s, and quite some of the fast ones are generic riffs only played really, really fast.

Nordra’s technique is very impressive, his ability to cook up prima riffs and disharmonies not quite so. And yeah, his (guitar) tone is really rather sharp, same goes for his vocals.

I’ll stick to Tsjuder, but if you are a major fan of fast, dirty and violent black metal, “NA” might do the job.

5,5 out of 10.
